Souvenir souvenir…

Bastien Dubois‘ latest shortfilm finally aired on French/German TV channel “Arte”.

With its unique animated visuals inspired by Argentinian illustrator Jorge Gonzalez and uneasy theme, I feel really privileged to have been part of this outstanding short film beautifully mixing 2d and 3d techniques.

The short film successfully relates Bastien’s unsuccessful multiple attempts at tackling the atrocities committed by French army during Algerian War of Independence. Not an easy theme to be treated in animation that’s for sure!

French and German viewers can hit the following link to access the short film in full.

For other territories, the short film is currently running in animation festivals so here is a trailer below in the meantime. The trailer’s music is not reflective of the final soundtrack 😉

Come back to this post in the next weeks as I will add some behind the scenes if I get the all clear from the production.

‘Pressing matters’ 01 rough first pass

You saw it here first ! 😉

Just so you don’t get mistaken, this is a short film I am working on. Well, I am only interested in telling stories those days so it might just stay in the state of boards.

This is the first time I use Photoshop for storyboarding so bare with me if it looks a bit rough. I will probably do a clean up version afterwards anyway. I have few more sheets coming in the next few days and you can expect the character design and the drawing style to change a bit as we go along. Let me know what you think!

“Yummy” – short film

After many years, my friend Maciek finally finished his short film “Yummy”.

Maciek and I started Animation Mentor together in Cassidy Curtis’ first class and after some struggles and set back, he eventually fulfilled his dream to became an animator in Feature Animation. I just hope he gets interviewed one day so he can explain how tenacious one needs to be to succeed. Ah and he could probably talk about his current workflow compared to when he started 😉

He recently revamped his blog, check it out http://www.maciekgliwa.com/

Electroshock – ESMA 2011

Look at what we got today! Elliot Maren just sent me a link to that great short film he made with four others ESMA students. Electroshock is a very good looking 8 minutes shortfilm done at French animation school ESMA and YES! it is not a FREAKING CHASE!!!! It is good to see that students still care about storytelling and acting.

The shortfilm is probably inspired by “Cloudy with a chance of meatballs” and it really matches the visual quality of Sony’s movie. I especially love the colours they put in the shadows and how they handled the SSS.

I have featured several short films from that school already and it is good to see that Gobelins and Supinfocom have a really strong competition.

The pool of talents in France is increasing dramatically, I just hope that one day the demand could match the offer. Investors, are you hearing me??? 😉

Great job guys!

Check out that great and probably new Aardman CG shortfilm, it is so funny! Great visuals, funny quirky dialogues and sounds (cavemen with zippers, who would have thought!). I hope they do more like that one.

This reminds me a bit of an old but great shorfilm by an other British studio “Studio AKA”, for the Natwest campaign.

I can’t stand Flash websites…. how am I supposed to embed anything?

Here is a link then… very sexy…:

Few years ago, finishing Animation Mentor meant making short films! What better way to show your individuality than making your own shortfilm. To me, an animator’s goal should be to make short films rather than just making shots. Andrew Gordon expressed a similar feeling in a 2008 Splinedoctors’ blog post.

Here is a great shorfilm by abAutorig maker and animator, Brendan Ross, aka “Supercrumbly”.

Sorry for the lack of updates but I am at the Annecy Animation Festival and I am too busy to update my blog. The festival is awesome as usual. We have been really privileged to see some video clips of Aardman latest Stop motion feature “Pirates” and Enrico Casarossa’s short “La luna”.

Back to my post. Alexandre from “Mytho Logique” or Mythologique just informed me about the release of their student shortfilm on Vimeo, check it out it is really impressive.

“Mythologique” (Mytho Logic for the english speakers) is a short film done by 5 student from french school ESMA for their final year.

Today I am gonna tackle the cartoony rigging of this guy so it ties a bit better with shot 12. I am keeping in mind to make the props looks a bit more wonkey but the rig could help for that.

La dama y la muerte (short film) 3

La dama y la muerte (short film)

La dama y la muerte

There are so many short film coming out all the time and I have so little free time that I tend to miss on a lot of little gems especially when the provided screenshot doesn’t do justice to the work.

“La dama y la muerte” (The lady and the reaper) is one of those short films I would have missed if my friend Dan didn’t tell me about it. I love the design of the characters especially “La muerte”, the wacky layout and storyboard, the cartoony animation, the lighting. This reminded me a lot of the wackiness in “The emperor’s new groove” which is a very good thing.

actually… even my friend Jamie told me about it since it was animated in 3dsmax and rendered in his favourite rendering engine Mental ray
