Shot 08 Work in progress

Following Mike Stern’s tip on the latest Animation Mentor newsletter, I have decided to bring all my shots to the same level of progress, then focus on the polish. That one was one of the most advanced ones but I have tweaked the camera slightly and might end up cutting it in two for the last part.

Anyway, I am posting this as it is right now and will do the editing once I have all the other shots.

Heck now I want to animate a vampire opening a door too!

That first “vampire pose” could be held a few more frames so it`ll read. Hold it as long as you can!
I`d vote for removing the gesture on 29. Less can be much more. I think it`ll work because less gestures but with sharper transitions will feel lots more cartoony?

I mean, as soon as the phrasing works you`re ready for the next scene right?

    Heya dude!

Was cool catching up with you today! I really like your blog dude, I often check it out to find plenty of insightful posts :-). We’ve been traveling with this little unix laptop and I can’t open .mov files. Look forward to checking out your stuff when I get back to my normal computer next week!

  3. Hey Bearded Dan 😉 yes it was great to see you guys yesterday. Thanks for passing by and good luck for the new term buddy!

@Henk Holding the first Vampire pose? hum, in continuity with the previous shot I don’t think I will be able to do that. The previous shot was in motion and requires some fluidity I think. As to removing the pose on 29 that’s a really tough call here. What do you mean by that? How would u suggest to go from the previous pose to grabbing handle one?

I`ll make ya a drawing when I have a bit more time.

ok reality check. “more time” won`t come anytime soon. So here it goes:

About the first pose when he walks in. Walking in is great. I mean, hold his head, torso and arm like that, but keep walking.

By skipping the gesture based on frame 29 you simplify things. So for example move from frame 16 to frame 46. I mean.. remove the huge anticipation before opening the door and keep our focus on his “vampirelike” behaviour. The gesture on frame 29 feels like a showmans gesture?

The opening of the door the way you do is awesome! That is time and poses well spent. To open a door to the outside world with the sun is a big thing for a vampire. By spending time opening those big heavy doors you emphasise that I think.

Anyway I hope its a bit clearer this way.
