208 assignment 0

208 assignment

Here is my new assignment for last week.

This week is second pass of blocking, week after refining, and the one after is final with polishing.

I spent a lot of time on this assignment already but only a bit is showing on the blocking since I have redone it completly. To be honest I have never felt so lost, how much should we put in the blocking? What do you do to avoid rotoscoping?
Hopefully this will be cleared when Robert comments my work.

I am gonna do this assignment in 3dsmax because I haven’t used it for a long time and never for character animation before. I usually claim that Max is a very decent 3d software so I have decided to put money where my mouth is this time. Will I burn my fingers? So far so good except that the rig is a bit different from the AM one. Here I have to animate the pole vector for knees and elbows.

Maciek’s planning

Here is the amazing planning of my friend’s Maciek for his next assignment.

Maciej Gliwa

The level of detail he puts on his planning can make you realise how much work is necessary before you actually get to start working in your 3d application. Animation is 50% planning and 50% animating.

Here is the news. Framestore|CFC feature animation is already hiring…. Couldn’t be a worse timing ever. I could always apply for a layout position though!

Video interlacing 2

Video interlacing

Definitely the last post before I start working on my assignment 😐

There is a concept I never completly grasped about video shooting, it is called Video Interlacing but don’t be scared, video interlacing? It is actually very simple.

If you look carefully on frame 163 of my last Video ref, you will see this:

When shooting video with any consumer camcorder this is what actually get printed on your tape so why is that?

To simplify, a PAL TV doesn’t display 25 fps but actually 50 fps. Have you ever heard of 50Hz TV? Now those 50 fps are not full frames, they are interlaced frames. The reason is because of the technology used. The tube of a TV in the past wasn’t able to display full frames so this was the trick used: displaying the odd lines on the first pass and the even lines on the second pass. (beware the order depends on the hardware).

On a fast movement like above, since one line out of two is captured 1/50th of a second later, then that second field will appear delayed.

If your footage is gonna be displayed straight onto your TV then you should just leave it as it is, the movement will appear very fluid.

Now the problem is when you want to do some compositing. Since each full frame is interlaced, an effect like a blur or adding adding a layer of CG will corrupt your interlacing.

In a video compositing/editing software what people do to avoid working on interlaced frames is to tell the software which field to use first. Here is the result you would get in Combustion:

No field selected

Upper field first

Lower field first

At first I thought that telling combustion to mix the fields, adding a bit of colour grading and some grain from a selected film stock would give my videos the film look, unfortunately this is not that easy.

How do you think Combustion is gonna give you your 25fps shot? I told you that the video was shot in 50 interlaced fields per seconds so the software will actually blend those 2 fields in a pretty disgusting manner. Look closely at the resulting effect:

Contrary to what you could think, the top picture is the blend result and the bottom one is the original interlaced footage. Annoying isn’t it?

Yes the sad reality is that if you want to get a film look there is nothing better than shooting on film.

Have you got any idea how much it costs to shoot on film? I don’t either but I have been told it was very very very expensive. Any alternative?

Actually yes, shooting full frame! At the moment, only prosumer camcorder like the old Canon XL1 are able to do that. The full frame mode is also called Progressive.

Have you ever heard that term before? It is the new format for 1080 HD but don’t be fooled, the latest Sony HD consumer camcorder doesn’t shoot full frame. If you are interested in the amazing HD quality you will have to wait for the next generation of HD cameras so for the time being you will be stuck to Pal and NTSC. Too bad isn’t it? Yes that really pisses me off too!

Oh I almost forgot, if you only have a cheap camera, some people are suggesting to import your footage twice with an opacity of 75% on each footage but to give a different field order for each. My DV cam is so crap that it doesn’t actually make too much of a difference.

For video reference I don’t mix the fields. Keeping my footage intelaced allows me to have a better view of the motion arcs. Hehe you didn’t know that did you?

I hope this was usefull to you. Happy filming!

[edit] some AE plugins like Twixor throw away one of the fields and with a bit of magic create the missing field. That looks great but sadly create some blur since half of the information is missing.

LowMax loaded ready for the new assignment 1

LowMax loaded ready for the new assignment

I just downloaded LowMax rig from my friend Peter Starostin’s website. And really wonder why I bothered so much to learn Maya when Max has already all the tools built in to do animation! No need of any mel script, it is built in.

To track your arcs in Max this is how you do it:

Right click on what you want to track and click trajectory, can it be any simpler? And it is rock solid and doesn’t slow down your computer AT ALL!!!

Ok this is the first time I am gonna use Max to try to do “feature quality” animation work and I have never done it before. Whish me luck! Maybe that I will go back to Maya, maybe not.

I am very very excited and if I succeed I will finally be able to add props, textures and get a great rendering in no time.

Thanks Peter your rig rocks!

Michael Chekhov 0

Michael Chekhov

Well too advanced for my level right now but here is a quick introduction to Michael Chekhov given at a demonstration-Performance by students of Graham Dixon’s “Michael Chekhov Studio London”

Born in 1981, the nephew of the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, Michael Chekhov is one of Russia’s most outstanding and innovative actors and diresctors.

Chekhov developed a unique approach to acting in which actors seek their characters in the imagination rather than in the intellect of in their personal histories. Much of his approach is dedicated to developing the means with which images (pictures, sounds, scenes) in the imagination can be artistically shown through the body on stage. His aproach provides techniques for enriching the actor’s craft, as well as developing the imagination and creative and personal life skills.

Pixar exhibition Philip Hunt Studio AKA talk 0

Pixar exhibition Philip Hunt Studio AKA talk

Tonight we had a talk with Philip Hunt from StudioAKA regarding the work of their studio and mainly about how Pitches are handled in London for commercial work. I love StudioAKA work, it is so eclectic, so quirky, so character design led. SO AMAZING!!!! 😉

Have you seen their latest National lottery commercial?

I had thousands of question but only managed to ask one regarding the eternal: all rounder against specialist 3d artist. I didn’t really get his answer to be honest 😉 the only thing that I remember is that he said people should focus on the audience. Sooo… should we be story tellers then? I guess that’s what he meant but can you tell stories by just being a rigger, can you?

My new assignment is about telling a story through an animation though, no lighting or texturing will be involved. I hope that’s what he meant. Being an all rounder to me those days is not possible anymore, 3d packages are getting sooooo complicated. One thing for sure is that I will never be involved in particules effect. Never say never 😉

Time for a quick snack and let’s start my blocking I have to quickly make a decision and decided if I am gonna use Maya this time or 3dsmax, I have to admit that I had enough with Maya. The software is so counter-intuitive that it is not a tool anymore, it has become a burden! With the 6 month experience I have had with it, that should be enough to get me a job requiring Maya now. Provided I have the animation skills though.

New assignment video reference

And this is the planning:

Robert is really concerned since I never managed to finish my assignment in the time allocated but except a flat move I should have plenty of time for animation for the next 4 weeks.

Welcome to animation crapoland! 0

Welcome to animation crapoland!

Mood of the week:
“I should rename this blog, Welcome to Animation Crapoland”

Everything is going wrong again. I am on the verge of giving up animation but I still think that I have an eye for animation and it is only the beginning of my training. The full training is 18 month so the way it is, it looks like I will only to be able to animate at the end of class4. That really sucks, I was hoping to get a job in animation by septembre which is a very important deadline for me, but so far I have nothing to put on my showreel except the boucing ball assignment and the Stu poses. Forget about holidays, this is gonna be animation in my bedroom for the entire summer.

This is my refined “jump on box” assignment. The first one has nothing to do with what Robert asked for and the second one is the real assignment. As you can see, the first one is actually more polished than the second one but well…. animation mental block, this is what it is called.

Jordi’s game if coming out soon, go and check why I get depressed when I see other people’s work. The fight sequences are keyframed, no mocap. Heavenly Sword. Yes Seb, that’s the game we saw at the Autodesk 3december event.

Robert just sent me an email asking why I didn’t put my video ref for next week’s assignment….the pressure in on again….

It’s more convenient! 0

It’s more convenient!

Funny how people would rather go for something convenient than something better.

Why do we go to Mac Donalds instead of cooking some fresh food bought from the local market?
Why do we listen to Mp3 when CDs have got a much better sound quality?
Why do we buy TFT screens when the traditional CRT screen has got got more vibrant colours and a much higher responsive time?

Has the world lost its mind?
